Protest of the Shoes: Grieving Every Loss of Palestine

Ceasefire Now! Stop the Genocide! Free Palestine!

The whole world is witnessing a genocide. From October 7 to today, more than 13,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip, 75% of the people killed are children, women, and elderly. The missing and injured persons are uncountable. More children have died in Gaza in the past month than have died in all conflict zones combined in the past year. The international community, including the UN General Assembly resolution, is calling for an immediate ceasefire from Israel, but the Israeli says there’s no ceasefire and continues to bomb.

On November 17th, 2,000 pairs of donated shoes were displayed in Bosingak Square, South Korea. A banner with the names and ages of the dead was also hung. On that day, the Urgent Action by the Korean Civil Society in Solidarity with Palestine led a movement.

1000, 3000, 5000… Every day, the death toll in Gaza and the West Bank is telegraphed to the world. The death toll is not just numbers. Each victim was someone’s beloved family, friends, and part of a universe with distinctive stories and dignity.

People who came to the square took a slow look at the shoes on display, put down the bouquet they had brought, and showed their condolences. They also left short notes on Post-its with words of solidarity in various languages.

During the Night of Remembrance vigil, there were solidarity speeches, performances, and poetry readings by activists, shoe donors, and Palestinians in South Korea. After the rally, participants surrounded the 2,000 shoes on display and chanted, “Israel must stop the slaughter!” “Freedom and peace in Palestine!” “Ceasefire Now!” and “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free.”

We strongly urge the Israeli government to stop further slaughter and to call an immediate ceasefire.
