Welcome Aung San Suu Kyi’s release from house arrest!

Military authorities must guarantee Aung San Suu Kyi’s political activities and release political prisoners!

Aung San Suu Kyi has been freed from house arrest by the Burmese military government a week after the general election on November 13.  PSPD welcome her release and urge the military authorities to guarantee the freedom of politics, release political prisoners by accepting the internal and external demand for democratization in Burma.

Being under house arrest for 15 years from 1989 to 2010, Aung San Suu Kyi has led a movement for democracy in Burma while insisting communication in nonviolence. Yet, the reality she is facing is not easy. The National League for Democracy(NLD) led by Aung San Suu Kyi has lost its legal status as a political party. The NLD denied party-enrolling, because military authorities presented the principle of election which excludes democrats from the election on November 7. Also we cannot exclude the possibility of detaining Aung San Suu Kyi again. The military government had repeated declaring Aung San Suu Kyi’s house arrest and release several times. There is still a considerable chance that the military will undo the release. In addition to that, people are raising questions about the justification of Union Solidarity and Development Party(USDP)’s coming to power due to the revealed illegality of the general election.

However, it is an encouraging news for the democratic movement in stalemate that Aung San Suu Kyi has been released from house arrest. We strongly insist that Burmese military regime’s decision of releasing her should not be used as a tool for avoiding criticism about the processes and its result. The Burmese military regime must ensure her political activities as well. We also strongly urge the military authorities to thoroughly investigate on the case which happened in 2007. The military authorities must work on the case and punish the men in charge of violent suppression in a peaceful demonstration. Furthermore we urge the Burmese military to guarantee Burmese people’s political rights including the release of over 2,000 political prisoners in detention camps.
