Candle rallies for dignity and peace

On Christmas Eve, lots of people holding candles gathered in front of the Kyobo bookstore in Kwangwhamoon, Seoul again. A married couple with a baby, lovers arm in arm, an old man and an old lady, a mother and a daughter, a father and a son, hundreds of persons participated. It came almost a month after November 26th when the candle rallies started.

“It was so touching,” said a coordinator of the Pan-Korea Committee for Two Girls Killed by a US armored vehicle (PCGU), “no matter about the rain, people joined the rally every day.” Ordinary persons are gathering in the rally and shouting ‘Apologize Bush, Revise SOFA.’

Every Saturday many more people are protesting in the place. December 21st almost ten thousand people participated the protest, surrounding the US Embassy with candles. It showed the heart of the Korean people who want to save their dignity and build peace in the Korean Peninsula and all over the World.

‘Men Surround the US Embassy’ and ‘One Million Peace Candles Rally’ will be held in Kwangwhamoon, Seoul on the coming 28th at 4 pm and the 31st at 6 pm. The PCGU said “the two rallies would be a promise for a world where a disaster like the atrocity of the two girls will not happen.” PCGU also suggested a Global Candlelight Wave. As the clock strikes midnight of 2003, participants of New Zealand will light the first candles. The flickers from these candles will be great waves of candle lights as it head west to Australia, Japan, Korea, China, India, Mid-East, Europe, and Great Britain. Then it will cross the Atlantic Ocean to blaze across the North and South American continent and finally cross the Pacific Ocean to end in Hawaii.

So, here we suggest that at the very beginning of the new year you
Light a candle to remember victims of war; may the light bring comfort to loved ones.
Light a candle to create a new wave of peace; may it end the vicious cycle of war and terror forever.
Light a candle to signify our promise that we will never let this violence take place again in any place of the world.
