Korean Action Network Against the War

Korean Action Network Against the War

On October 10, 2001, after the United States initiated its attack on Afghanistan, 765 Korean civil organizations came together to announce an anti-war and peace statement. At the press conference, NGO activists from sectors such as education, labor, farmers, the deprived, women, religions, reunification, peace, academic, and environmental, shared their opinions regarding the contemporary world situation since the 9.11 terror in the United States. Later, on November 8, about 600 out of the 765 organizations established a coalition for an action network.

Korea is one of the most serious victims of the wars that the United States has intervened in during the 20th century. Approximately one tenth of the whole population died during the Korean War, and the country has been divided into two until today as a result of the war. Since the Armistice Agreement in 1953, South Korea has been paying for the U.S. troops stationed in Korea. There are continuing damages by the U.S. troops in Korea due to their stationing. Korea’s diplomatic relationship to the United States leaves very little chance for Korea not to support the wars that the United States has been involved in so far; such as the Vietnam and Gulf Wars, for example. Under these circumstances, Korean NGOs have come together to voice up what Korean people really think.

Activities of the Action Network are focused on four points: 1) No to the United States’ retaliatory war against Afghanistan; 2) No to Korea’s aid for this war; 3) No to Japan’s attempt to reestablish militarism, and its dispatch of some of its Self-defense Force to Afghanistan; and 4) Yes to supporting Afghanistan refugees.

Collecting signatures on the appeal to be sent to both the Korean and U.S. governments, the Korean National Assembly, and political parties and fundraising groups are what the Network is mainly campaigning for. There will be an open conference on Korea’s dispatch of troops, and what Korean NGOs have to do in case the National Assembly sanctions that dispatch. A large-scale peace rally is planned for December 15 with the theme “Over the valley of war towards the ocean of peace.” A fundraising Concert is also planned for the 24-6th of December.
