Turkish – Korean – Japanese Peace Consensus on Iraq

The anti-war movement from Turkey, Korean and Japan have united to voice our opposition to our governments?collective complicity in supporting the illegal US and allied occupation of Iraq. We oppose the proposed, and further deployment of troops to Iraq and call on our governments to withdraw commitment to Iraq in this form.

Based on the Jakarta Peace Consensus, the peace-loving people from Turkish, Korean and Japanese civil society, demand an immediate end to the illegal occupation of Iraq by the US-led coalition and the immediate withdrawal and removal of all foreign troops, military advisers and representatives, military equipment and armaments.

We insist that our governments recognize that the Iraqi people have absolute and sovereign rights to determine their own future. No occupying power has the right to violate the territorial integrity of Iraq. Any decision about the need for international assistance rests solely with the Iraqi people.

We strongly support independent civil society assistance to and solidarity with the Iraqi people however we urge our governments to seriously reconsider the form in which they commit themselves to the ‘reconstruction?of Iraq. Any commitment should not serve as a cover to legitimize, or profit from, the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq. Humanitarian aid must not be used to support or promote the military, political and economic objectives of the occupying forces. We insist that our governments?involvement be carried out for the benefit of the Iraqi people.

Voices of Turkish civil society
We wholly reject the Turkish government’s October 7 decision on to deploy Turkish forces to Iraq. We urge the government to listen to the voices of the Turkish people who oppose such involvement in Iraq and withdraw the decision of dispatchment.

Voices of Korean civil society
We oppose the Korean government’s October 17 decision to deploy troops to Iraq. Korean people do not support this decision as we refuse to lend legitimacy to the US-led war of aggression and illegal occupation. We call on the Korean government to focus on building peace and stability on the Korean peninsular and not to frustrate the building of better East Asian relations by deploying combatant troops to Iraq.

Voices of Japanese civil society
The people of Japan raise their voices against any proposed deployment of the Self Defense Forces to Iraq. We make a timely reminder to the Koizumi Government of the importance of the proper interpretation of Article 9 of the Constitution and advocate that Japan not seek to follow a policy of militarization. Japan’s grant assistance must be used for the empowerment and well-being of the Iraqi people and not to further Japan’s corporate and state interests in the Middle East.
