미군의 ‘팔루자 민간인 학살’ 증언 공개돼

“들어와라, 하지만 우리는 여기 없을 것이다.”

“이제 시작이다. 제발 들어와라. 하지만 나와 ○는 아마 없을 것이다. 사람들이 미쳐가고 있다. 외국인들이 온다면 안전하지 않다. 팔루자의 ○○ 사제는 내 안전을 보장할 수 없다고 말했다. 매우 험악하게 되고 있는 것이다. 곧 외국인들이 살해되기 시작할거다.… 어머니에게 아무 말도 하지 않고 왔다가 일주일 후에 돌아갈 수 있을 것이라고 생각하지 마라. 우리는 아마 내일 살해될 것이다. 들어와라, 하지만 우리는 여기 없을 것이다.”

미군의 팔루자 학살에 관한 생생한 증언들이 공개됐다. 이라크 시간으로 4월 10일, 전화선을 통해 전해진 증언은 “미군의 이라크 민간인 학살”을 생생히 폭로했고 이 내용은 이바 야시에비치 씨에 의해 세계 평화운동가들에게 긴급하게 타전되고 있다.

이바 씨가 통화한 이들은 10일 현재 팔루자에 머물렀던 파올라 쟈스피롤리 (이태리인, ‘점령감시’ 및 ‘바그다드로의 다리’에서 활동), 언론인 리 고든 (영국인, NUJ, Tribune, Mail on Sunday), 그리고 팔루자에 가족이 있는 팔레스타인인 한 명이다. 이들은 지난 사흘동안 부상자들을 팔루자에서 바그다드로 후송하며 목격한 것들을 전화를 통해 이바 씨에게 증언했다.

이들에 따르면 일주일 사이에 6백명의 사망자와 1천명 이상의 부상자가 발생한 팔루자 지역에는 구급차의 출입마저 통제된 상황이다. 그뿐 아니라 미군은 병원을 폭격하고 구급차에 총을 쏘며 심지어는 아이들까지 학살하고 있다. 이들은 미군에 의한 끔찍한 학살현장이 뉴스에는 전혀 보도되지 않고 있다며 세계에 도움을 호소했다. 팔루자 지역은 현재 휴전 중이지만 곳곳에서 교전이 계속되고 있다.

이바 야시에비치는 ‘광야의 목소리’ 및 ‘이라크 점령감시’등의 단체에서 활동했고, 이라크 (바그다드와 바스라)에서 8개월, 팔레스타인(주로 제닌 수용소)에서 6개월간 거주한 뒤 2개월 전 다시 이라크로 돌아갔다. 이바 씨는 바스라와 바그다드에 있는 동료들과 정기적으로 연락을 하고 있다.

다음은 이들이 이바 씨를 통해 증언한 내용 전문(번역: 서재정 코넬대 교수)이다.

팔루자 현장 증언 1: 파올라 쟈스피롤리 (이태리인, ‘점령감시’ 및 인도적 지원단체 ‘바그다드로의 다리’에서 활동)

팔루자에서 학살이 자행되고 있다. 팔루자는 포위되어 있다. 470명이 살해됐고, 1천700명이 부상당했다. 정전은 없다. 미국인들이 주민들에게 소개를 명령했다. 8시간 안에 떠나라는 말을 듣고 주민들이 팔루자를 떠났으나 이들은 사막에 갇히고 말았다. 미국은 B52폭격기로 폭격을 했다. (리가 사흘 전에 보낸 이메일도 이를 확인하고 있다.)

‘바그다드로 가는 다리(인도적 지원단체)’는 철수한다. 아만에서 출발하는 비행기를 예약했다. 내일 한 팀은 사드르시로 가서 약품을 전달할 것이다. 그곳에서는 50여명의 시민이 살해됐다.

이름을 잊었지만 “고무줄”이라는 별명의 사드르시의 한 사제는 (내가 직접 만나 봤는데, 젊고 똑똑한 사람. 회교와 도덕적 행동율 등의 해석에 있어서 매우 신축적이라서 스스로 자신을 “고무줄”이라고 부른다. 굉장히 진보적이다) 나더러 떠나라고 말했다. 그는 자신도 자신의 신도들을 통제할 수 없다고 했다. 외국인들이 목표물이 될 것이다.

외국인 6명이 추가로 납치됐다. 그중 4명은 이태리 경비회사 직원이다. 이들은 검은 제복을 입고 무기가 가득 찬 차를 타고 있던 상태에서 납치됐다. 바그다드는 아부 그레이브(바그다드 서부로 거대한 감옥이 있는데 죄수 1만2천 명이 넘쳐날 지경이다)를 제외하고는 조용하다. 그곳에서는 미국 차량행렬이 공격을 받아 군인 9명이 부상을 당하고 27명이 납치됐다. 맞다. 27명. 그러나 뉴스들은 이 사실을 보도하지 않고 있다. 나는 이것을 ○

(이름은 허락받지 않는 한 공개하지 않는 것이 좋겠다)에게서 들었다. 상황은 매우 매우 심각하다. 미군은 구급차에도 총을 쏘고, 저격병이 구급차를 따라 다니고 있다. 구급차조차 들어갈 수 없다.

팔루자, 거기는 사람들이 사막에 있다. 그들은 팔루자를 떠났지만 바그다드에 들어가는 것이 허용되지 않고 있다. 그들은 사막에 갇혀 있다. 그들은 난민이다. 처참한 일이지만, 사람들은, 이라크인들은 자기가 줄 수 있는 모든 것을 이들에게 주고 있다. 양식을 가져다 주고, 모두가 자신이 할 수 있는 모든 도움과 지원을 팔루자에 주고 있다.

나는 여기에 남고 싶지만 떠나야 한다. 다시 돌아와서 도움이 되려면 지금 떠나는 것이 최선이라는 것을 알지 않는가. ‘바그다드로의 다리’는 그렇게 결정했다. 이태리인에게 매우 위험한 상황이 될 것이다. 우리는 우리가 지금 타겟이 되고 있다고 느끼고 있다. (이태리는 나시리아를 점령하고 있는 카라비니에리를 포함해서 2천5백명을 파병했다. 나시리아에서는 여러차례의 저항군 공격이 있었고, 경찰서에 대한 강력한 공격에서는 군인 4명과 민간인 1명, 기록영화 제작자 1명, 카라비니에리 경찰 12명, 이라크인 8명이 목숨을 잃었다.)

○와 리는 대단하다. 이들은 차를 몰고 팔루자에 들어가서 사람들을 데리고 나오기를 여러 차래 했다. 이들은 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있는 지 알고 있다. 진짜 이들은 대단하다. 이들은 더욱 많은 사람들이 도와주기를 바라고 있지만 우리는 더 이상 여기서 도움을 줄 수 없다. 상황이 매우 매우 악화되고 있다.

팔루자 현장 증언2: 팔루자에 가족이 있고 이라크 회교정당에 친구들이 있는 팔레스타인인

우리 자신의 눈으로 그것을 목격했다. 주민들은 팔루자를 떠나라는 명령을 받았고, 현재 수천명이 사막에 갇혀 있다. 바그다드로 오려는 사람의 행렬이 13km에 뻗쳐 있다. 미국인들은 이들에게 폭탄과, 자신들이 갖고 있는 것은 모두 다, 모두 다 쏟아 붓고 있다. 이들은 가족들에게도 총을 쏘고 있다. 사막에 있는 이들은 모두 아이들이나, 노인, 여자들이다. 다른 이라크인들이 이들을 도우려 하고 있다.

팔루자에서 미국인들은 병원들을 폭격했다. 아이들은 바그다드로 피신시키고 있다. 현재 아동 하나, 사실 어린 아기는 가족 25명이 살해됐다. 그 아기는 병원에 있는데 누군가가 곁에 있어야 한다. 지금 막 가족 25명을 잃었는데 왜 아무도 그 애의 곁을 지키지 않는가!

미군은 집속탄을 투하하고 3-4미터씩 튀어오르는 박격포탄을 쏘고 있다. 공중에서 폭격을 하고 있다. 거리에 시체들이 즐비하게 쓰러져 있다. 미군은 정전이 있을 것이라고 말했지만 폭격기들이 날아들어 와서, 이것은 내가 봤다, 폭격을 시작했다. 이라크인들은 저항하고 있고 팔루자에서 잘 싸우고 있다.

그러나 우리는 24-48시간 안에 대규모 공세가 있을 것으로 예상하고 있다. 대대적인 공격일 것이다. 미군은 거리를 하나씩 수색하고 공격해서 이 시를 재점령할 것이다. 이 근처에 있는 마을 (그 마을 이름은 잊었다)에서 이미 그렇게 했고, 팔루자에서 또 할 것이다. 제발 도움이 필요하다. 사람들이 항의하도록 해달라. 대사관에 가거나, 나가서 무엇이던지 하도록 해달라.

학살이 진행되고 있다. 우리는 외국인들이 필요하다. 외국인들은 무언가 할 수 있다. 우리는 항의시위를 할 것이고, 조 (조 윌딩, www.wildfirejo.org.uk)와 그 단체의 일원들이 내일 미군 검문소까지 올 것이다. 우리는 지난 3-4일동안 잠도 자지 못했다. 우리는 관심이 필요하다. 사진도 있고, 필름도 있다. 이것을 알자지라와 알 아라비야에 주었다. 이것이 알려져야 한다. 당신이 할 수 있는 모든 것을 해달라. 우리는 내일 다시 들어 갈 것이다.

팔루자 현장 증언 3: 리 고든 (영국인, 언론인 Tribune, Mail on Sunday)

곧 외국인들이 살해되기 시작할거다. 사람들이 절박한 심정이 되기 시작할 것이다. 어머니와 아버지, 집, 고양이, 개, 모든 것이 폭격받는 것을 목격했으니 이들은 공격하기 시작할 것이다.

미국인들은 이 작전이 닷새만에 끝날 것이며 이제 거의 끝나가고 있다고 말하고 있다. 이들은 이라크 전역에서 터지고 있는 전선에 투입돼 있는 군인들을 불러들일 것이다. 그리고는 최후의 결정타를 먹일 것이다. 그 어느 누구의 안전도 보장할 방도가 없다.

Iraq Solidarity Action – Resist the Massacre in Falluga

Urgent information and appeal from Ewa Jasiewicz, who worked with Voices in the Wilderness and Occupation Watch in Iraq, lived there for 8 months (Basra and Baghdad) and in Palestine, mainly Jenin camp for 6 months, speaks Arabic, and who got back from Iraq 2 months ago. She is in regular contact with her friends in Basra and Baghdad.

I just spoke to friends in Baghdad – Paola Gaspiroli, Italian, from Occupation watch and Bridges to Baghdad, Journalist Leigh Gordon, England, (NUJ, Tribune, Mail on Sunday) and a Palestinian friend with family in Falluja and friends in the Iraqi Islamic Party. Both he and Leigh have been ferrying out the injured from Falluja to Baghdad for the past three days. Ambulances have been barred from entry into the

blood-drenched city.

Here is their news, which they told me over the telephone tonight (Friday)

Paola:

There has been a massacre in Falluga. Falluga is under siege. 470 people have been killed, and 1700 injured. There has been no ceasefire. They (Americans) told people to leave, said they have 8 hours to leave and people began to leave but they’re trapped in the Desert. The Americans have been bombing with B52s (Confirmed also by Leigh in an email three days ago). Bridges to Baghdad are pulling out. We have flights booked out of Amman. Tomorow a team will go to Sadr City to deliver medicines. 50 people have been killed there. ?? (Forgotten name) the ‘elastic’ shiekh in Sadr City (I’ve met him, young, brilliant guy, describes himself as ‘elastic’ because he is so flexible when it comes to his interpretations

of Islam and moral conduct definitions etc, he’s pretty liberal) he has told me I should leave. He says that even he can’t control his people.

Foreigners are going to be targeted. 6 new foreigners have been taken hostage. Four of them are Italian security firm employees – they were kidnapped from their car, which was found to be full of weapons, and there were black uniforms. Baghdad was quiet today except for Abu Ghraib (West Baghdad, where a vast prison is located and is bursting at the seams with 12,000 prisoners) an American convoy was attacked there and 9 soldiers were injured and 27 were kidnapped. That’s right 27. None of the newswires are reporting it though. And I heard this from (*name best not to supply without permission). Its really really bad. They Americans) have been firing on Ambulances, snipers are following the ambulances,

they cannot get in.

Falluga, there are people in the Desert, they’ve left Falluga but they’re not being allowed into Baghdad, they’re trapped in the Dessert, they’re like refugees, its terrible but the people, Iraqi people are giving all they can; they’re bringing supplies, everybody is giving all their help and support to Falluga.

I want to stay but I have to go, if I want to come back and be useful, you know I think its best to leave, Bridges to Baghdad has decided this. It’s getting really dangerous for Italians. We feel like we’re being targeted now. (Italy has a 2500+ force including Carabinieri occupying Nassiriyah which has been subject to a number of resistance attacks including the devastating attack on the Police station which claimed the lives of 4 soldiers, one civilian, one documentary film maker, 12

Carabinieri police and 8 Iraqis).

(.) and Leigh have been great. They’ve been driving into Falluga and bringing out people, going back and forth. They know what’s going on, really they have been great. They want more people to help them but we couldn’t from here. It’s getting much much worse.

My friend who’s been in Falluga today and for the past few days:

We’ve been seeing it with our own eyes. People were told to leave Falluga and now there are thousands trapped in the Desert. There is a 13 km long convoy of people trying to reach Baghdad. The Americans are firing bombs, everything, everything they have on them. They are firing on Families! They are all children, old men and women in the dessert. Other Iraqi people are trying to help them. In Falluga they (Americans) have been bombing hospitals. Children are being evacuated to Baghdad. There is a child now, a baby, he had 25 members of his family killed, he’s in the hospital and someone needs to be with him, why isn’t anyone there to stay with him, he just lost 25 from his family!??? The Americans are dropping

cluster bombs and new mortars, which jump 3-4 metres. They are bombing from the air. There are people lying dead in the streets. They said there’d be a ceasefire and then they flew in, I saw them, and they began to bomb. They are fighting back and they are fighting well in Falluga.

But we are expecting the big attack in 24-48 hours. It will be the main attack. They will be taking the town street by street and searching and attacking. They did this already in a village near-by, I forget the name, but they will be doing this in Falluja. Please get help, get people to protest, get them to go to the Embassies, get them out, get them to do something. There is a massacre. And we need foreigners, the foreigners can do something. We are having a protest, Jo (Jo Wilding www.wildfirejo.org.uk) and the others from her group are coming to the American checkpoint tomorrow. We haven’t slept in 3 or 4 days. We need attention. I have photos, film, we’ve given it to Al jazeera, Al Arabiya but get it out too. Do everything you can. We are going back in tomorrow.

It’s kicking off. Come by all means but me and (..) probably won’t be around. I mean they’re going to crazy. (.) is saying for foreigners to come but its not safe. Sheikh .. from Falluga said he couldn’t guarantee my safety. I mean its going to go crazy, I think foreigners will start getting killed soon – I mean people are going to

start getting desperate, when they’ve seen their mother father, house, cat, dog, everything bombed they’re going to start to attack. They (Americans) have said this operations only going to last 5 days’ it’s drawing to an end. They need to free up troops on other fronts breaking out all over the country. They’re going to go in for the kill. There’s no way of guaranteeing anybody’s safety. I think you can be useful but its not like you can just not tell your mum and think you’ll be back in a week. We’re probably going to get killed tomorrow. Come, but we might not be here.
