Concerns over North Korea’s Missiles Launch

It has been reported that North Korea launched at least 6 missiles including Taepo-doingⅡ this morning. We, Center for Peace and Disarmament of the People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, are deeply concerned that despite the worries of international community, including the South Korean government and civil society North Korea pushed to launch missiles.

Given the chilling atmosphere and increasing tensions on the Korean Peninsula, it cannot be considered only as a matter of sovereignty in North Korea. This action will possibly lead to a longer halt of the 6 party talks and deteriorate the situation on the Korean Peninsula by providing neighboring countries with excuses for hostile policy and military reinforcement based on the threat by North Korea. It will certainly have negative impacts on the efforts to support the North by the South Korean government and civil society. If the Korean Peninsula comes to a crisis and the conflicts get severe, the cost will be paid by the people in Korea. Therefore, we express our regret that North Korea ignored our worries and further deteriorate the situation.

However, it is not wise to take a hard-line to respond to this action of North Korea. The problems should be solved by dialogue at this critical conjuncture. The Bush administration should agree to come to a direct talk with North Korea. We call other countries as well as the South Korean government to take cautious and peaceful actions to solve this problem.
