Collaboration between PSPD and Resource Centre for Asian NGOs

Collaboration between PSPD and Resource Centre for Asian NGOs

Dr. Kim Seongsoo, President of Sungkonghoe University

It is my pleasure publicly to announce that the Resource Centre for Asian NGOs at Sungkonghoe University has decided to collaborate with the People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy in the publication of the English journal the Asia Solidarity Quarterly. Sungkonghoe University is quite a small university with about 2,000 students, however, the University has big ambitions. We try to create ? Big Forest with the Participation of all the Members rather than individual big trees . Thus, we prefer one step forward with hundreds of students to an isolated hundred-step forward.

In accordance with these ambitions, the University is also very interested in social activism. We have various on campus centres concerning social activities such as the Resource Centre for Asian NGOs, the Centre for Human Rights and Peace, the Institute for the Aged, and so on. We have also created the Korean Democracy Museum with support from movement organisations and those who have been involved in Korea Democracy movements. Many historic documents and other materials are being collected and exhibited in the museum.

In particular, the University has special interests in NGO activities both in Korea and in Asian countries. So we set up an MA programme in NGO Studies in which the majority of the students are NGO activists. In this way, the University has already established a strong relationship with civil organisations and their activities in Korea. The University as an academic institution undertakes an activist education as well as research into the dynamics of civil activities. We, the teaching staff and students, are very proud of it. In addition, the University has gained a good reputation among activists and scholars in Korea.

In 1999, the University established the Resource Centre for Asian NGOs in order to cooperate with NGOs in Asian countries. First, we would like to collect all the materials associated with Asian NGOs activities and distribute them to all parts of the world. In addition, we would also like to set up an exchange programme of NGO activists with institutions in Asian countries. The Centre has already collected a considerable number of resource on the activities of Korean NGOs. However, we are never satisfied with this, and do our best to collect all the resources from Asian countries for distribution and exchange for activism as well as academic research.

Therefore, as president of Sungkonghoe University, I am very pleased that the Resource Centre for Asian NGOs is collaborating in the publication of the Asia Solidarity Quarterly with the PSPD. I strongly expect that this collaboration will bring fruitful results to Sungkonghoe University, the PSPD, other civil organisations and academic institutions concerned with social activism.

On behalf of all the members of the University, I would like to support the collaboration and am looking forward to very constructive results for all. Thank you very much.
