China must place a high value on human rights rather than natural resources!

Press Conference: Urging China and UN to Support the Pro-democracy in Burma

The Denunciation for Massacre of Burmese people and the Urgent Action for Pro-Democracy Support (abbreviation: Urgent Action for Burma) had the press conference on 9 October at noon in front of the Chinese embassy and urged the China about the pro-democracy for Burma.

Among neighboring countries, China is the country that is known to have a very close relationship with the Burmese military regime. China is the representative trade country of Burma and in the meantime China supported the Burmese military regime through a close diplomatic relations. Also, China has been objecting the discussion and resolution about human rights in Burma at the international community such as the U.N. On the past January of 2007, China has exercised the veto power with Russia on the resolution of human rights in Burma that was decided by voting at the U.N. Security Council.

Currently, there is an urge from the international community that the U.N. Security Council should step forward to resolve the current incident in Burma. Especially, the international community is urging China to support the pro-democracy in Burma and not stand on the opposing side. There is a movement of boycott against the 2008 Beijing Olympic for the achievements of their goal.

Hence, the ‘Urgent Action for Burma’ also wants the U.N. Security Council to adopt the resolution to solve the current incident in Burma, wants to prevents the China’s supports on Burmese military regime and urge China to supports the pro-democracy. That was why the ‘Urgent Action for Burma’ had the news conference at the front of the Chinese embassy.

[STATEMENT]

China Should Stop Supporting Burma’s Military Dictatorship, and Should Support for Burma’s Democracy with UN

Thousands of monks and citizens have already lost their life fighting for democracy. It has been said that Burma’s military government is secretly destroying dead bodies to hide number of people they have killed. To solve current situation and advance to democracy, China’s discontinuation of support of Burma’s military regime, and support of pro-democracy movement along with UN and international society is highly necessary.

Since October 9, 2007, 10 thousand protesters have been arrested, and about one thousand including 500 monks have died in Burma. Monks and movement leaders who have led last month’s demonstration prepar for the next fight, temples continue pro-democracy candle light vigil, citizens turn off radio and television at the news-time to avoid hearing government’s voice.

UN’s special envoy to Burma, Ibrahim Gambari have met Burma junta supremo Than Shwe and symbol of pro-democracy movement Aung San Su Kyi. Also, international blaming of Burma junta and demonstrations continue world-wide including Asia, India, and Europe. However, Burma junta even made a statement saying Aung San Su Kyi should give up resisting against the junta. It is clear that the junta is avoiding Burmese and international society’s demand.

International society is demanding UN Security Council to act in Burma. Especially, they are demanding China to support for Burma’s democracy. China has been making close diplomatic and trade partnership, and has therefore been supporting military junta. In fact, last January of 2007, Russia and China have vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution.

China is ignoring military junta’s inhuman and undemocratic bloodshed grounding that this is an internal affair. Yet, this is only an excuse of China who wants economic benefit in Burma. Human rights and democracy are universal values and everyone should endeavor to achieve this. If China continue ignoring Bumese and international society’s demand for democracy and continue supporting Burma junta, international society will protest against 2008 Beijing Olympic.

We strongly criticise Burma junta’s bloodshed, and demand UN and China the followings:

1. UN should solve current situation in Burma, and should give full effort for Burma’s democracy and human rights achievement.
2. China should stop supporting Burma junta, and should not avoid Burmese people’s demand for democracy any more.
