Letter from Farooq Tariq, Spokesperson of Labour Party Pakistan

This is a letter from Farooq Tariq, spokesperson of Labor Party Pakistan. It condemned the Korean government’s deportation of 6 social and political activists from Korea. He also called for an apology and asked for no more recurrence like this case in the future.

Dear friends,

On behalf of Labour Party Pakistan, National Trade Union Federation, Pakistan Kissan Rabita Committee*, Women Workers Help Line, Progressive Youth Front Pakistan, I strongly condemn the deportation of six Philippines social and political activists namely Josua Mata of Alliance of Progressive Labor, Joseph Purugganan of Focus on the Global South, Maria Lorena Macabuag of Migrant Forum Asia, musician/poet and Asian Public Intellectual Jess Santiago, Rogelio Soluta of the Kilusang Mayo Uno** and Paul Quinto of Ibon Philippines, from South Korea. This is outrageous decision of the South Korean government to stop them from entering South Korea and participating in the Seoul International People’s Conference organized by Put People First! Korean People’s G20 Response Action network.

The detention and then deportation of these six activists exposes the real undemocratic nature of the present government of South Korea. They were sent back despite the fact they carried visas and other documents to enter South Korea. The government inf act was afraid of the power of the ideas these activists were carrying to South Korea to counter the neo liberal agenda of the so-called G20.

We demand an unconditional apology from the South Korean government and a guarantee that no one will be ever deported for political reasons. We will demonstrate in front of South Korean Embassy in Islamabad Pakistan if our genuine demands are not met by the government.

In solidarity,

Farooq Tariq
spokesperson
Labour Party Pakistan
