[Press Statement] We Call on the Military Regime of Burma to Suspend the Undemocratic 2010 Elections, and the Government of Korea to Refuse to Recognize the Results

We call on the military regime of Burma to suspend the undemocratic 2010 elections, and the government of Korea to refuse to recognize the results.

In Burma, which is under military rule for 48 years now, the military regime is set to undertake undemocratic elections in 2010, aiming to extend their rule over the people. In response to this, a number of civil societies from around the world initiated on May 27, 2010 the Global Campaign Against Burma’s 2010 Military Elections, including Taiwan(Province of China), Malaysia, the US, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Sweden, the UK, India, Japan, Thailand, France, the Philippines, and Hong Kong(Special Administrative Region of China), as well as Korea. Today marks the 20th anniversary of the last elections in Burma on May 27, 1990.

The military junta tried to force referendum on the New Constitution twice on May 10th and 24th in 2008 despite severe suffering of the people following the Cyclone Nargis in May 2008, successfully passing the Constitution. This year’s elections will take place under the undemocratic ‘New Constitution’, which is intended to perpetuate the military rule. By means of the ‘New Constitution’ the military regime intends to evade the responsibility for the crimes against humanity so far so that it can seize and sustain itself in power.

The ‘New Constitution’ bans the most viable leaders of Burma’s democratic and ethnic opposition. Major opposition leaders and political parties, who are eager for the resignation of the military leadership and democratization in Burma, have decided not to participate in the 2010 military elections.

With elections ahead, Burma is still groaning under oppression by the military rule. Numerous political prisoners including the pro-democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi are still under house arrest and in custody, with ethnic minorities continuously being oppressed.

The people of Burma desire truly democratic elections, not the ones selected by the military regime. We, the civil society in Korea strongly support Burmese people and call on the following to be implemented:

-The unconditional release of all political prisoners, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi;
-Cessation of hostilities against ethnic groups and pro-democracy forces;
-Scrapping of the 2008 Constitution and legislation of a new constitution both in name and in reality;
-For the Government of Korea to denounce these military elections in public;
-For the Government of Korea to make clear that it will refuse to recognize the results.
