Editor’s Note

To Readers,

Owing to enthusiastic support from the readers of the Asia Solidarity Quarterly, we are able to publish the fourth issue. On behalf of all the members of the Editorial Board, the People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, and the Resource Centre for Asian NGOs, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart.

This issue includes some news from the two supporting organisations, the PSPD and the RCAN. The PSPD news mainly covers the material from its seventh General Assembly, held on the 10th of February. This reviews the accomplishments of the PSPD in the year 2000 and its major plans in 2001. In addition, one of the most representative activities of the PSPD is examined under the title of “Shareholder Activism in Korea”. The campaign for shareholders has been a strong means for economic reform in Korea, through which the PSPD has become well known to the public.

The RCAN is organizing the second “Leadership Programme for Migrant Workers” beginning on the 11th of April. The second training programme is solely for the Korean activists supporting migrant workers, whereas the first one was for the migrant workers in Korea themselves. The MA programme for NGO Studies at Sungkonghoe University is briefly introduced by Dr. Cho Hyo-je, the head of the RCAN. Please keep your eyes on these special programmes and never hesitate to contact him if you have any inquiry.

In addition to the news of two organizations, three topics are highlighted in this issue. First, the issue of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan during the Second World War (Military Comfort Women) is examined and discussed. One report, “Why has the Korean Council for Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery by Japan been made?”, examines the activities of the victims and their support in Korea, and how they organised their campaigns in order to spread the issue to the public and to build up solidarity with other activists as well. Dr. Cho Shi-won’s paper reports the activities and discussion conducted during the Civil Court 2000 in Tokyo. This examines excellently what has been done in the court.

Second, this issue highlights the Truth on Suspicious Deaths. This includes three papers: the activities of Presidential Truth Commission on Suspicious Deaths in Korea is examined by Mr. Hwan In-sung, Secretary General of the commission. In addition to the Korean case, the Chilean case of the Truth Commission and the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission are also briefly reported for comparison among these countries’ present histories.

Third, the National Missile Defense system of the U.S. government is critically reviewed by Prof. Lee Sam-sung, a leading scholar in this field in Korea. The Korean Committee Against NMD-TMD and For Peace was launched on the 9th of April by more than 30 civic organizations. The plan of the committee is briefly introduced. Please do not hesitate to contact the committee, if you have any inquiries.

I would like to ask you, the readers of the ASQ, to send any comments on this quarterly. From the next issue on, the editorial board wants to publish some comments from readers, or reader’s opinions for Asia Solidarity about civil organizations.

I am looking forward to your reply. Thank you very much.

Dr. Jin Youngjong
