[Statement] Stop the excessive law enforcement against protestors and release those under custody!

Stop the excessive law enforcement against protestors and release those under custody!

The Court must stop its excessive law enforcement against protestors and release those the police have taken under custody!

(6 June 2014, Seoul) Recently the Court has issued warrants for arrest to three protestors: one Seoul National University student protestor who was protesting inside a government building on the 22nd, and the Secretary General of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and a member of the government employees’ union who attempted to march towards the Blue House(Presidential Office) during the candlelight vigil on the 24th.

Despite the fact that the three protestors’ identities were made clear with solid affiliation records that repudiate any question of flight risks, the issue of arrest warrants to these protestors based on the minor problems that happened during the vigil and protest procedures cannot but be understood as excessive law enforcement which undermines the freedom of expression, speech, and assembly guaranteed by the Constitution.

We denounce such action of the Court and question the intention behind such excessive law enforcement as a way to suppress the People from asking for truth and justice in the aftermath of the Sewol Ferry tragedy and for the government to answer to its responsibilities by threatening protestors with arrests.

The Court must cease its excessive law enforcement, release the three protestors under custody, and uphold the people’s right to the freedom of expression, speech, and assembly as guaranteed by the Constitution.
