Visit to NGOs in the Phillippines and Thailand
Visit to NGOs in the Philippines and Thailand
11 ~ 17 October 2001
The Resource Center for Asian NGOs (RCAN) organized an contemporary team consists of 11 activists from 8 Korean NGOs to take a field trip to the Philippines and Thailand during 11 ~ 17 Oct. 2001 under the title of “Networking Asian NGOs in the face of Globalization and Deepening Economic Disparity.” As economic globalization progresses, the income disparity both within and between nations deepens, as also several worldwide social problems. The Korean NGOs participating in this trip looked for a remedy for the problems caused by globalization in Asia. They tried to develop an alternative to the international trend with confidence that only NGOs can develop an alternative to globalization through sharing experience and ideas and responding together to the problems. The RCAN and Korean NGOs proposed this visit program as the first step in order to establish an NGO network in Asia in an effort to address the problems accrued by globalization, including poverty within the region, and to broaden the understanding of the issues in collaborative endeavor.
During the visit the team divided into 5 small groups according to themes such as participatory democracy, poverty, women, sustainable development, and migrant workers, and respectively had several round table discussions with the local NGOs/ Pos, visiting their activity sites in each nation with a plan to formalize network and communication channels by sharing activities and opinions about each contexts affected by globalization. The Korean participants returned to their work in Korea after the 7 days trip with the consensus that the problems of globalization are not restricted within a nation or a region and the problems in each nations are closely linked to each other. The NGOs’ solidarity network across Asia is essential in responding to the backlashes of globalization.
