Introducing Righteous People of Our Generation

Introducing Righteous People of Our Generation

On December 15, 2010, PSPD held <2010 A Night for Informants for the Public Good – Conscientious Whistle Blowers> to present the “Man of Righteousness Award” to seven selected “righteous people”.

It was the first <Night for Informants for the Public Good – Conscientious Whistle Blowers> held by PSPD with a view to encouragement and appreciation for bravery of those who stand against lies, injustice, abuse of power, fraud and corruption in our society.

All acts of whistle blowing concerned have been performed by means of public disclosure or declaration of conscience since 1990, when the auditor Mr. Lee Moon Ok first disclosed absurdity for the public good. More than 50 people including Whistle Blowers for the Public Good and their supporters gathered for the ceremony, where they encouraged one another and ruminated upon the social values of public disclosure. Also, through an official recommendation and assessment, “The 1st Man of Righteousness Award” was presented.

The winners of the award selected included those who had disclosed for the public good government or corporate corruption and waste of budget through declaration of conscience; those who had made public government’s abuse of power or contributed to keeping democracy from receding; and those citizens who had supported Whistle Blowers for the Public Good or the victims of abuse of power by the government since 2008. The seven winners of the “1st Man of Righteousness Award” are as follows;

Kim Dong Il (Superintendent of a tax revenue office)
Kim Dong Il considered a new face of whistle blowing for the public good in that he underwent organizational suppression for having asked his organization to examine itself regarding the abuse of power by the head of the National Tax Service.

Kim Young Su ( Lieutenant Commander)
Kim Young Su is a typical whistle blower for the public good who first raised questions regarding corruption in the navy and disclosed it to civil organizations and the media.

Kim Ie Tae (Researcher for KICT)
Kim Ie Tae made a declaration of conscience in disclosing information concerning the 4 River Project, a grand canal on Daum Agora. He is currently under organized suppression with regard to the disclosure, and thus is an exemplary whistle blower for the public good.

Kim Jong Ik (former NS-Hanmaum CEO)
Kim Jong Ik, presents a new case of whistle blowing for the public good, he fell victim to and held out against the monopolization of power and abuse of authority through privatization of government power and disclosed the absurdity to the media in person.

Kim Hyung Tae (former high school teacher, member of a board of education)
Kim Hyung Tae is another exemplary whistle blower, in highlighting absurdities in the Yancheon High School Foundation. He reported corruption inside the school to an inspection agency, for which he received status-related disadvantages.

Lee Du Hee (University student )
Lee Du Hee reported an unfair practice in recruiting military officer cadets. He is eligible to be selected as a whistle blower for the public good as it is a typical declaration of conscience to make public a wrongful practice committed in the interview for recruitment.

Lee Yong Seok (Professor at Yonsei University )
Lee Yong Seok informed the lobby to assessors responsible for selecting ‘Infra Network Project for SKT’s Post Biz HQ’. He is a case of a typical whistle blower for the public good in that he reported the illegal lobby to the Rights and Interests Committee and civic groups.
