[statement] Impeachment is a Challenge to Democracy and National Assembly’s Coup

On March 12, 2004, lawmakers from the Grand National Party and the Millennium Democratic Party passed the nation’s first presidential impeachment bill. Although the impeachment process was done in a seemingly legal manner, the motion, failing to stand on a clear constitutional basis, is nothing but a mere political ploy. The lawmakers abused their power as representatives to go against the public opinion; they abused their power as a majority holder in the parliament to pass the unconstitutional bill. It amounts to a ‘coup without guns’ against the people who had elected the president. We ask all the parties and congressmen that passed the impeachment bill whether they even care about our country and people.

Those who approved the political bill for their political benefits will be held responsible for all the confusions which could result from their irrational act. They succeeded in passing the impeachment bill, but they will never accomplish their political purpose. We are certain that what they chose to do today is their self-destruction. Their political scheme will face people’s resistance and be dealt a certain defeat.

In order to end the national crisis as soon as possible, the Constitutional Court should take into account people’s opinion as it makes a speedy review of the unconstitutional impeachment bill . The case is very simple in term of legality. As there is no reason for the Constitutional Court to take up to 6 months to deliberate on this, it should make a quick and clear decision.
