Countering
Maritime Militarization and

Peace-building in East Asia

– Let’s make the
Pacific pacific!

– 27 November
2012,
1:30pm~5:30pm

– The National
Assembly Library Small Meeting Room (B1)

East Asia
is receiving wide attention due to its economic vitality and resiliency even
during the global financial crisis. Meanwhile, tensions are rising to dominate
resources and space in the region, and old territorial and historical disputes are
more visible. The current situation, which is resulted from competitive militarization,
setback for democracy with exaggerated fear, threatens safe and peaceful life
of people living in East Asia including the
Korean Peninsula
rather than securing them.

Year 2013 marks
the 60
th year of ceasefire in the Korean Peninsula.
Hatred and military tension in the country has been seriously deteriorated in
the last few years. It reached its peak when the Yeonpyeong artillery exchanges
occurred at the end of 2010. Not only
North Korea
but also
South Korea
intensified conflict and disputes rather than enhancing conciliation and
cooperation. It unnecessarily provoked North Korean leaders while creating
environment where both South Korean and American policy makers would take more aggressive
and authoritative attitude. The unstable ceasefire situation of the
Korean Peninsula
is being used to justify not only military alliance among Korea-US-Japan which
leads to militarization in
East Asia but also strengthened
Chinese armed forces.

Is it impossible
to peacefully coexist and live in harmony in East Asia including the
Korean Peninsula?
It cannot be achieved by relying on militarism that has been justified under
the name of realism in the international politics. Militarism has not solved
any problems but only creates more problems. Why don
t we give peace a chance? Why dont we become more creative to find solutions to bring peace in the
region? In this regards, we are holding the 3
rd International
Workshop for Peace and Disarmament in the Asia-Pacific Region. From this
workshop, we hope to contribute to bringing peace in the region and opening a
new era for more peaceful world. We sincerely invite you to this International
Workshop.
