PSPD’s Significant Activities In 2023
Thanks to the members and people who joined our activities in 2023, PSPD was able to shout hope even amidst regression. While some activities did not lead directly to change and there were disappointing outcomes that did not fully capture the aspirations of the people, we were able to make gradual progress by changing flawed laws and systems. The following are the changes made in 2023 by People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy and the People.

The Changes We Made With People in 2023!

PSPD won a lawsuit (first trial) against the police, which prohibited gatherings near the presidential office. We submitted an urgent petition to the UN Special Rapporteur, reporting the South Korean government’s suppression of the freedom of assembly and protest, and requested a recommendation for cessation of such actions.

Together with the bereaved families of the Itaewon tragedy on October 29, NGO network including PSPD initiated the proposal for a special law to uncover the truth, with the participation of 183 members of the National Assembly. We also pressured for the designation of this proposal as a fast-track item to ensure the swift passage of the law.

PSPD published the 2023 Prosecutor+ Report titled “The Land of Prosecutors: One Year Later” which meticulously documents the major investigations and personnel changes within the prosecution. Additionally, the subscriber count for the prosecutor monitoring newsletter “The World of Kku” has surpassed 26,000.

PSPD filed a public information disclosure lawsuit against the Presidential Office, resulting in a ruling for the disclosure of the list of Presidential Office employees. Furthermore, we reported Yoo Byung-ho, the Secretary-General of the Board of Audit and Inspection, to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials in relation to the national audit concerning the relocation of the Presidential Office to Yongsan.

We led the enactment of a special law together with the victims of rental fraud and are actively promoting a revision movement to support the victims and address the gaps in assistance.

PSPD delivered 200,000 signatures collected over the past three years for the Korea Peace Appeal to the United Nations and the governments of South Korea, the United States, and China, urging the international community to pay attention to peace on the Korean Peninsula.

We have released an alternative report on pension that includes reform measures for the National Pension, in response to the government that prioritizes financial stability while neglecting old-age security.

PSPD demanded a national investigation from the National Assembly regarding the obstruction of the investigation and allegations of external pressure related to the death of Corporal Cha in the Marine Corps, and we filed a complaint against President Yoon Suk-yeol and four others to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials.

During the 2016 general election, activists who engaged in voter mobilization efforts were acquitted of most charges through a retrial. This ruling is significant as it acknowledges the legitimacy of voter mobilization activities by the judiciary.

PSPD reported issues to the Fair Trade Commission regarding unfair Kakao gift-giving commission fees and the abusive practices of Coupang’s agency system, thereby raising public awareness of the need for regulation of large platform corporations.

We have conducted various peace activities, including a shoe protest to mourn the victims and call for an immediate ceasefire, the protection of civilians, and the cessation of the occupation of Palestine, in response to Israel’s indiscriminate attacks on the Gaza Strip.

We have continuously provided updates to over 100,000 citizens who participated in various campaigns, signature drives, and events. In particular, we directly engaged with around 10,000 citizens, resulting in 2,200 individuals becoming members.
All of these changes were made possible through the participation of people. The world does not improve on its own, but we have the power to change it.
With 0% government funding, we proudly stand against any unjust power and privilege through independent financial management, relying solely on the strength of our members.
Let us create change together with you!!
